High school volunteering project “Leaders Create Leaders”

High school volunteering project “Leaders Create Leaders”.

Overview of the project.

An excellent way for high school students to discover what makes a successful leader is to become involved in the teen leadership volunteering project. The project allows the teen to actively participate in program planning, become involved in leadership tasks, and help younger members learn by example. Also, this is achieved through providing young people with access to good quality volunteering, and social opportunities and supporting them to realize their own projects and ideas. Such projects provide young volunteers with a sense of citizenship and community responsibility.

The current school project “Leaders Create Leaders” (hereafter, LCL) focuses on school needs and guides students to develop, plan, carry out, and evaluate their actions to improve the academic performance of the 7th Graders. Through LCL we (school) reflect the identified needs within our school and this area of school work is predominantly based on 3 tenets:

  • Intergenerational– Through intergenerational practice, LCL aims to bring students together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities, which promote greater understanding and respect between generations, and contributes to building more cohesive school community. Intergenerational activities build on the positive resources that the young, older and middle generations have to offer each other and are an effective way to address issues important to our community. LCL Intergenerational initiatives fall into three categories: supporting each other, working together to address community issues, and learning together.
  • Active Citizenship –LCL embraces the principles of Active Citizenship and this philosophy is integral to all our work. Young people are encouraged and supported to involve themselves within the community and engage in volunteering. LCL is youth led, each member gains inspiration from peers and through service delivery young people learn to understand each other’s differences and to respect one another.
  • Social Action – LCL encourages social action supporting young people to work together to effect change both in their lives and within the community, raising funds for issues they feel passionate about and organizing practical tasks.
