At the beginning of the 21st century the accelerated socio-economic development of Kazakhstan caused an urgent need of professionals with a high level of technical, management and leadership competencies, so in 2008 at the initiative of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, a project on creation of Intellectual schools was started. Therefore, on September 1, 2009 “Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics” opened its doors in Kokshetau, rich in industrial production and agriculture.
The school has 807 students and 72 classrooms. There are classrooms for mathematics, robotics, physics, chemistry, biology, small and large gym, a football court and 2 libraries on the territory of the school.
The school has two libraries in order to ensure students’ successful integration into the world educational space and access to information in Kazakh, Russian, English languages. The school is implementing an educational program “NIS-Programme”, developed jointly with a strategic partner – the University of Cambridge. The content of academic disciplines is based on the integration of Kazakh and international programs, taking into account the profile of subjects of natural and mathematical direction.
In June 2017, the school was accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS). As a member of the CIS, the school confirmed compliance with international standards for the organization of school life and the educational process. Students also cooperate successfully with other international schools in the form of online conferences and discussions. These are the Indian School “Purwanchal Vidyamandir”, Calcutta, the UK school “Wapping High school”, London and the Moscow region gymnasium named after E. M. Primakov.
799 students graduated from the school from 2011 to 2021. Today, they are students of Nazarbayev University, Kazakh-British Technical University, Kazakhstan Institute of Economics and Strategic Research, Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi, International University of Information Technologies and other local prestigious universities. Also graduates of the school study successfully at universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Singapore, Cyprus, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus.
At the same time, the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics of Kokshetau is a methodological center whose main purpose is to exchange the experience and provide methodological support to the teaching staff of the schools of Akmola region, schools of Bulandy and Burabay districts participating in the ‘Rural School’ project, to methodologists of methodological offices of district, city departments of education of Akmola region, as well as to graduates of colleges and universities of the region within the framework of updating the content of education.
